From the earliest times of Native Americans, through European explorers and settlers, lumber barons, loggers, and surveyors of the 1800s, to the present day, Maine’s woods have provided resources that enhance the livelihoods of Maine’s residents. Author Henry David Thoreau recognized the Maine wood’s intrinsic value and called for its conservation long before it became a popular American cause.
