A Sense of
Place:
Campaign for the West Branch
With the support of more than 300 contributors, the campaign to conserve the largest contiguous block of land ever protected in Maine has been achieved. The precedent-setting West Branch project permanently conserves 329,000 acres for their productive forests, recreational opportunities, and ecological values. The state of Maine owns 47,000 acres of highly significant recreational and ecological lands, and FSM holds an adjoining, complementary 282,000-acre conservation easement that ensures sustainable forestry, ecological protections, and traditional recreational access.
These lands include
the West, North, and South Branches of the Penobscot
River, as well as Baker Lake and some of the St. John
River's headwater ponds. With the completion of the campaign, which includes a stewardship endowment, we can all enjoy the many benefits of this land now
and into the future.
