Peter S. McKinley, Ph.D., Director of Forestland Conservation
Peter joined FSM in October 2007, filling a newly created staff position. He is charged with generating new conservation opportunities and projects as well as seeing these through to the acquisition of conservation and stewardship interests. He has a background in conservation biology, and has studied industrial forest conservation in the Moosehead Lake region as well as forest fragmentation effects on songbird populations in Indiana and New Brunswick, where he obtained his doctorate. Peter spent several years working for a private, Maine-based timber and land management company as a forester and staff ecologist. While there, he gained valuable insights the operational and economic aspects and challenges of working forests, working forest easements, and forest certification programs. Prior to joining FSM, Peter worked as a consultant in Western Maine’s high peaks region and was a staff ecologist and project director with New Hampshire Audubon.
