Machais River Phase II:

Phase II of the Machias River project protects nearly 7,700 acres, including 47 miles of lake shoreline, along the headwaters of the Machias River. These lands were transferred to the state of Maine by the Conservation Fund in 2006. The portions of the project on Fourth and Fifth Machias Lakes and Fifth Lake Stream, totaling about 2,800 acres, have been designated as ecological reserves because of their high value wetlands and wildlife habitat. These portions have additional protections placed on them, in the form of a deed restriction held by Sweetwater Trust. FSM is currently working for Sweetwater Trust to complete the baseline documentation report on the ecological reserve sections.
