What is the Amherst Mountains Community Forest?
Like many towns in Maine, the people in Amherst, just 25 minutes east of Bangor, are faced with the challenge of deciding how to balance development and growth with the desire to maintain their town's rural character and traditions. They have chosen to work with the Forest Society of Maine and the Maine Department of Conservation to establish a community forest centered on a 5,000 acre forest that encompasses a series of scenic and ecologically important small mountains and remote ponds.
