Alan has served as executive director of the Forest Society of Maine since its inception as a staffed organization in 1997. During that time he has overseen FSM’s successes with their partnership effort on the 20,000-acre Nicatous Lake easement, the campaign to acquire Big Spencer Mountain and six miles of undeveloped Moosehead Lake shoreline, the West Branch Campaign that permanently conservation 329,000 acres, and the development of an easement oversight and management program for landscape-scale easements. Alan has more than 35 years of experience in land conservation, natural resource issues, and organizational management. Educated in both wildlife ecology and forestry, he holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Maine. Before joining FSM, Alan worked for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for 24 years, directing the state’s Endangered Species Program from 1984 to 1997. He is a past associate faculty member at the University of Maine, a past trustee of the Maine Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and an author of books on loons and eagles.
